Thanksgiving is here, and at Bazurto Kennels, we have so much to be thankful for. As I sit down to plan my holiday menu (turkey, stuffing, and maybe an extra slice of pie or two), I can’t help but reflect on the many ways these wonderful English-style Labrador Retrievers have brought joy, love, and yes, a little chaos, into our lives.
Thanksgiving is all about gratitude, gathering, and maybe sneaking a treat to the dog under the table (don’t worry, your secret is safe with me). But it’s also a time to slow down and appreciate the simple things—things that our Labs seem to understand better than most.
Lessons in Gratitude, Courtesy of Our Labs
If there’s one thing Labradors excel at (besides being adorable), it’s living in the moment. They don’t overthink things, hold grudges, or stress about burning the turkey. They’re just happy to be here, tail wagging, ready for whatever the day brings.
Take one of our older Labs, Charlotte, for example. Every time I step into the kennel, Charlotte greets me like she hasn’t seen me in years—even if I was just there five minutes ago. Her excitement is contagious, a gentle reminder to appreciate the people (and pups) who make life special.
In a way, Charlotte is like that friend who makes sure everyone at the Thanksgiving table feels welcome and loved, even if they accidentally spilled cranberry sauce on the tablecloth.
Family Gatherings, Labrador Edition
Thanksgiving at Bazurto Kennels might look a little different from the typical family feast. Instead of a big dining room table, picture a pack of playful Labs romping in the yard, with the occasional pause to beg for a piece of turkey.
Every litter we raise feels like a family in its own right. Watching these pups grow, bond, and develop their own personalities is one of the greatest joys of my job. Sure, there are moments of mischief—like the time one pup decided to “carve” the pumpkin centerpiece with his teeth—but those are the memories that make the holidays unforgettable.
And just like at any family gathering, there’s always that one “uncle” who eats a little too much and ends up napping on the couch. Around here, it’s usually one of our bigger boys, flopped out on the floor, blissfully unaware of the chaos around him.
Thanksgiving Treats: What’s Safe for Your Pup?
If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably thought about sharing a little Thanksgiving love with your furry family members. While Labs are notorious for their love of food (and their talent for looking very convincing when they beg), it’s important to keep them safe.
Here are a few dog-friendly Thanksgiving options that will have tails wagging:
- Turkey (plain, no skin or seasoning): A little bit of white meat is a tasty treat for pups.
- Mashed sweet potatoes (unsweetened): Skip the marshmallows, and your dog will still love this vitamin-packed snack.
- Plain green beans or carrots: Crunchy and healthy, these veggies are always a hit.
- Pumpkin puree (unsweetened): Great for digestion and packed with nutrients!
Remember to avoid anything seasoned with onions, garlic, or nutmeg, and keep chocolate desserts far out of reach. And if you’re not sure about a specific food, it’s always best to double-check before sharing.
A Time to Reflect
This Thanksgiving, I’m especially grateful for the families who’ve welcomed one of our puppies into their lives. Watching our Labs grow up in loving homes is the ultimate reward. I often get updates—photos of a pup lounging by the fireplace or helping “supervise” the Thanksgiving cooking—and it fills my heart every time.
It’s amazing how these dogs bring people together. Whether it’s a family playing fetch in the backyard, a couple sharing a quiet walk, or a child laughing as a Lab gives them a sloppy kiss, these moments of connection are what life is all about.
And while I may not have a chance to see all of our extended “puppy family” in person, I like to think that a little piece of Bazurto Kennels is there at each of their Thanksgiving tables, wagging its tail and stealing the occasional bite of turkey.
Gratitude, Labrador Style
One of my favorite Thanksgiving traditions is taking a moment to reflect on the year and the blessings it brought. At Bazurto Kennels, that list is long:
- Our puppies: Each one is a bundle of joy, mischief, and endless potential.
- Our kennel families: You’re the reason we do what we do, and your love for these pups means the world to us.
- Our Labs: Whether they’re snuggling on the couch or chasing a tennis ball, they remind us to appreciate the simple, beautiful moments in life.
And of course, I’m thankful for the chance to do what I love every day. Raising these dogs isn’t just a job—it’s a passion, a calling, and sometimes (okay, often) a hilarious adventure.
A Final Thought: Giving Thanks and Sharing Love
As you gather around your table this Thanksgiving, I hope you’ll take a cue from our Labs. Be present, enjoy the company of loved ones, and don’t stress too much about the little things (like the fact that the gravy turned out a little lumpy).
And if you happen to have a Labrador by your side, give them an extra belly rub for me. They’re not just pets—they’re family, and they bring more joy and love than we could ever repay.
From all of us at Bazurto Kennels, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving filled with laughter, love, and maybe a little puppy mischief.
