World Dog Surfing Championships – Water Safety and Beach-Loving Pups #DogSurfing #LabradorRetreiver #BazurtoKennels

In California, “winter” doesn’t hit like it does elsewhere. August through October is actually peak coastal event season—especially in NorCal and SoCal. Sure, fall might be around the corner, but tell that to the Labs still cannonballing into the Pacific like it’s July.

I caught a few clips from the World Dog Surfing Championships in Pacifica last weekend, and let me tell you—there’s nothing more heartwarming (or hilarious) than a Labrador riding a wave like it’s no big deal. I swear, one of them even stuck the landing better than I do getting out of bed.

Now, most Labs may never ride a surfboard, but every single one I’ve raised would absolutely charge into the ocean like they were born there. That kind of enthusiasm is part of what makes them so lovable—but it’s also why we need to talk about water safety, especially when salty waves and thick coats come into play.

Born to Splash—But Not Bulletproof

Labrador Retrievers were quite literally bred to retrieve from cold waters. They’ve got the drive, the webbed feet, and the “please throw that again” attitude. But saltwater and sunshine? That’s a different story.

Between long coats, sensitive skin, and those “just five more minutes” beach attitudes, Labs can get themselves into trouble if we’re not paying attention.

Saltwater Isn’t Just Salty—It’s Drying

We all know the ocean’s salty, but what you may not know is just how harsh saltwater can be on your dog’s coat and skin:

  • It strips away natural oils that keep skin hydrated
  • It irritates sensitive spots like ears, bellies, and groins
  • It can leave your Lab itchy, flaky, or uncomfortable for days after

It gets worse if your pup’s coat hasn’t been trimmed or brushed out properly. When those double coats get waterlogged and salt settles in? It’s like wrapping your dog in a crusty beach towel for the rest of the day.

The Danger of “The Extended Drive Home”

Here’s something I always warn new Lab owners about: that drive home from the beach—you know, the one where your pup air-dries in the backseat while you coast down Highway 1 with the windows cracked? That salty coat isn’t just drying out—it’s baking in irritants, parasites, and who-knows-what from the ocean. Salt, sand, and even microscopic hitchhikers don’t just rinse off like they do from human skin. If you skip a proper rinse, you’re setting your pup up for an itchy, uncomfortable evening.

That’s the danger zone.

Saltwater dries into their coat, baking in irritation. By the time you’re home, that feel-good beach day might turn into:

  • Excessive licking or chewing
  • Skin redness or inflammation
  • “Hot spots” from trapped salt, sand, and heat

Preventing this is easier than treating it—trust me.

Beach Day Dog Care: Pre and Post Surf Checklist

Before the beach:

  • Brush your Lab’s coat to remove dead hair and prevent tangles
  • Trim long belly fur (don’t shave!) to help water drain easier
  • Apply paw balm to protect against salt and sand abrasion
  • Make sure they’re hydrated—saltwater isn’t for sipping

After the splash:

  • Rinse them off immediately with fresh water (most public beaches have rinse stations—use them!)
  • Towel dry thoroughly, especially behind ears, under arms, and between toes
  • Check for any signs of irritation or rash that night or the next morning
  • Brush out their coat again to remove lingering salt or debris

Bonus points if you follow up with a calming coconut oil spray or soothing leave-in conditioner for pups. (Yes, we’re that kind of kennel.)

Even Surfing Dogs Have Groomers

Those show-stealing dogs at the Surfing Championships don’t just roll out of bed and grab a board. Their humans keep them in top shape, with clean coats, protected paws, and probably some top-tier towel-drying choreography.

The truth is: even if your Lab is just paddling near the shore, you should treat them like a surf pro when it comes to safety and grooming.

SoCal Surf and Labrador Love

At Bazurto Kennels, we love a good splash. Our Labs are raised to be confident around water, but we also train them—and their people—to respect it.

Whether you’re hitting the coast this weekend or just playing hose fetch in the backyard, remember that salty skin, hot sun, and wet fur don’t mix without care. Your Lab depends on you to help them stay healthy while they do what they love.

Ready to Make a Splash With a Labrador?

If you’re dreaming of beach walks, big splashes, and sandy snuggles, you can get in touch. Our Labs may not all surf, but they definitely know how to ride the wave of life—with love, joy, and one very soggy tennis ball.
